WEEK 5

In week five of the drama class, there was a new instructor introduced whom we did several activities with him. All these activities were revolving around using gesture and body language or movement to tell a story or deliver a certain massage rather than using verbal way of communication. Firstly, he stated by placing many pieces of paper on the floor written action words. We then had to move around the classroom then pick any paper on the floor the act out their meaning using body language without any verbal communication of their meaning. This way of storytelling allows me as a teacher to teach foundation phase vocabulary in the interactive way which bring effective vocabulary instruction in my teaching practice. This helps the teacher to develop leaners holistically as it improves domains such as social, emotional and cognitive development.  However, it became difficult as some of the words were difficult to display their facial expression.

Secondly, some of the students seat down while certain number of students continued to act out the actions on the paper. The instructor then told us to tell any of the story we have then he used the body movement to express the story being told by us without saying any word. After we also did the same thing of acting out using the gesture to express the stories that were verbally told to us as groups of four people. This helps to incorporate leaner's attention and concentration in the classroom which proves their attention span

Lastly, the last activity was when the instructor did body movements to tell different stories, and we also repeated the same gesture he displays after him then gave explanation about what the gesture was talking about or explained the stories that were expressed through gesture. Below is the video demonstrating this activity.

The Friday lectures this week was focused of exposing us to different big book for storytelling. There were different big books that were displayed in the classroom. It also introduced us to the philosophy of teaching children theory as the main tool that emphasized on the impotence of asking questions in the classroom, it promotes discussions amongst leaners and make them to respect each other's opinions and build and from each other's ideas. In conclusion of the lecture, Dr Kate ordered the small group of students to gather around her on the floor while she is reading the story to them. After reading the story she then asked the student to per themselves to create interesting questions that worth debate from the story they heard. This leads to interaction amongst leaners which improves language and social development.
